July is month of festivals, fun and (hopefully) sun. Just in case it rains, you can keep the young people in your life occupied by taking a look at our selection of children's books, including some activity books. Or treat yourself to a good read while relaxing in the sun.

In the Gospel of John, we see the honest fall-out from Jesus' difficult teaching: 'Jesus said to them, "if you do not eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you will not have life in yourselves' (Jn 6:53). John presents an unambiguous teaching on the 'bread of life'; he is pointing to the reality of crucifixion and death that cannot be hidden or brushed under the carpet. As Christians,... Read More »

I Believed, I Promised, I was Healed - Saint Artemide Zatti

On Saturday 8th October, the Salesian Family met in the St Paul VI Audience Hall in the Vatican City, to start the celebrations of the Canonisation of Artemide Zatti. When we got to the Vatican, and through security, we were ushered into the St Paul VI audience hall. It's very striking to see the ceiling and the two stained glass windows on either end of the hall. Once we had taken our seats along... Read More »

Sunday Reflection - 29th Sunday of Ordinary Time (Year C) - Pray without ceasing

Today's Gospel reminds us of the need to be persistent—some may see it as getting what you want by nagging long and hard enough. Luke presents the officious judge 'who does not fear God or has respect for humanity!' He is seen as totally self-sufficient, centring his whole life on himself. He is neither a man of faith, nor a lover of his community. The judge finds himself under the attention... Read More »

Today's gospel sees Jesus in border territory: he is in that land between Galilee and Samaria. Jews and Samaritans lived closely together in a geographical area, yet philosophically, socially, and religiously, the two groups could not be further from each other. However, as is so often the case, disaster, pain, and disease does not respect religious or political borders. The dreaded and feared lepers... Read More »

In Search of Angels

The Scottish folk group 'Runrig' sing a beautiful song called 'In Search of Angels'. 'Runrig' were a Celtic rock group formed on the Isle of Skye in 1973; in their songs and music, they reflect the Scotland that they love in a way that, for me, the 'Saw Doctors' reflect life on Ireland's West Coast. Both groups are worth a listen as they explore simple, eternal truths and events... Read More »
