Sunday Reflection - 4th Sunday of Ordinary Time (Year A)

In today's Gospel, we are presented with a crucial teaching of Jesus—known as the Beatitudes. Matthew has Jesus going up the mountain to give his teaching—for his Jewish audience, there would be strong echoes of Moses going up Mount Sinai to receive the Commandments (see Ex 19). Just as Moses gave a list of moral guidance to the Chosen People, so Jesus offers guidelines to His friends and... Read More »

If you want to read a challenging book at this start of a new year, I can highly recommend Alasdair's Richardson's 'The Salesian Martyrs of Auschwitz' (available from https://www.salesians.org.uk/bookshop/8957). It is a brilliant and accessible account of the Salesian presence in Poland during World War II and in the tiny town of Oswiecim-a town to go down in the history in infamy under its Nazi name AUSCHWITZ. A trip... Read More »

The first of three films that we can share, named "Don Bosco", was made in 1936. The film was made upon the occasion... Read More »

New Year often marks a new start for many of us—we make resolutions because we want to transform our lives. For some of us it might having to make a new start away from home as we, for example, start a new job. In our Gospel today, Matthew sees Jesus leaving the safety and security of his family home in Nazareth. I love visiting Nazareth as one can get a feel for the ordinary and very human life... Sunday Reflection - 2nd Sunday of Ordinary Time (Year A)
Posted: Fri, 13 Jan 2023 13:18
In this Year of Matthew's Gospel, we now move into what is termed 'Ordinary Time'. However, one can argue, that after the events of these past few weeks, our lives can never again be termed 'ordinary'. God has burst into our little world in the most dramatic, yet ordinary, way. The birth of the child in Bethlehem transformed our world. The dawning of this extraordinary new light into our ordinary little... Read More »
