Don Bosco Today snippet - Yes and No

For the Don Bosco Today Magazine, Fr Michael Winstanley SDB wrote an article on the parable of the two sons where one says yes, and the other says no.

Below is the text from the video:

The parable of the two sons depicts contrasting responses to their father's request: one initially refusing but later complying, and the other eagerly agreeing but failing to act. It reflects Jesus' ministry to outcasts, showing how they embrace his message while the religious elite resist. This narrative resonates with family dynamics, evoking a range of emotions when requests are met with varied responses. It prompts reflection on our reactions to requests and our relationship with God.

Jesus emphasises action over words in Matthew's Gospel, stating that obedience to God's will defines true discipleship. The parable underscores God's patience with initial refusals on the journey to eventual acceptance.

Looking back on our lives, we may recall instances where we initially refused but later complied, or where we agreed but failed to act sincerely. This parable challenges us to consider our responses to requests and our relationship with God.

It also invites reflection on whether we merely go through the motions of discipleship, procrastinating or making excuses instead of taking action. Jesus stresses the importance of action in Matthew's Gospel, emphasizing that those who do the Father's will become part of Jesus' family.

Ultimately, the parable suggests that God looks to the final outcome of our lives, willing to endure initial refusals on the path to a final and lasting acceptance.
