July is month of festivals, fun and (hopefully) sun. Just in case it rains, you can keep the young people in your life occupied by taking a look at our selection of children's books, including some activity books. Or treat yourself to a good read while relaxing in the sun.

The Summer Holidays might be finished, but the happy memories remain ever vivid and heart-warming. Many amazing memories were made last summer at our Summer Parish Camp in Bootle. In July and August, we invited 14 young people to join us for a week of fun, prayer and reflection in a Salesian style. It was definitely the highlight of our summer.

The plan was very simple: each day we would gather for a moment of prayer led by Bro Nhan, then a catechism session from Fr Jakub and a trip for the rest of the day. With so many memories I have picked just a few to give you a flavour of the great time we had.

One day we went ice skating. For many of our young people this was the first time they have been on ice. This didn't stop them from taking up the challenge. It wasn't long before they were skating around the rink without holding on to the barriers, and even gliding while keeping the perfect posture. Towards the end we had a little surprise: a meeting with Karen Barber (head coach from Dancing on Ice). The young people were delighted to chat with her and take some photos.

On another day we visited Blackpool Pleasure Beach. A day full of excitement, without a doubt. Perhaps the biggest challenge was to try the Big One (a steel roller coaster, one of the tallest and steepest in the world). At the start of the day some of the young people announced that they are too afraid to try it. Nevertheless, after a while, the ride had piqued their interest and they had to try it. They greatly enjoyed it and there was a lot of laughter. We had a great day.

The last memory I wanted to share is from our final day. On Sunday, 21st August we started with the Sunday Mass at St James'. Some of our participants served for Mass. While they had many opportunities in our school chapel, this was the first time they served in a real parish church. I could see a sense of achievement in their eyes. And what is more important – a sense of drawing closer to God through their service. Mass over, we gathered for a short Catechism session and then headed for Chester. On this day we were visiting Chester Zoo. Once again – a great day. Good weather meant that we were able to see many animals. There was also time for face painting and a lot of fun.

We are very grateful for the time spent together and we are looking forward to our future camp next year!
