July is month of festivals, fun and (hopefully) sun. Just in case it rains, you can keep the young people in your life occupied by taking a look at our selection of children's books, including some activity books. Or treat yourself to a good read while relaxing in the sun.

Thornleigh students speaking out for our environment

Thornleigh Salesian College has been focusing on our environment this week. In their virtual assembly, Nicky, one of the students, anchored the broadcast, outlining Laudatio Si, Pope Francis' letter urging us to care for God's creation and protect the poorest, and introducing this week's special guests, Bishop John Arnold and Dan Hale of CAFOD.

She also interviews Bishop John, who is leading the Diocese of Salford in positive action to halt climate change. The assembly suggests changes we can all make in our own lifestyles and habits to help protect our planet, and Nicky asked Deputy Principal Mr Kirk about Thornleigh Salesian College's own plans to manage its impact on the environment. The video includes a look back to last year, when a group of students took part in a lobby of Parliament to urge action on climate change. The Thornleigh group made quite an impact when they were filmed by the BBC interviewing their local MP.

The Rector Major's Strenna this year is based on Don Bosco's aim that Salesian education aims to help young people become 'Good Christians and upright citizens', and in actively enquiring and urging change to protect God's creation and his people, these students exemplify just what Don Bosco had in mind.
