July is month of festivals, fun and (hopefully) sun. Just in case it rains, you can keep the young people in your life occupied by taking a look at our selection of children's books, including some activity books. Or treat yourself to a good read while relaxing in the sun.

Students talk about Lent

Chaplain, Fr Jakub describes the start of Lent at Savio Salesian College, Bootle.

Last Wednesday we have started the season of Lent. In Savio we marked this special day with two Ash Wednesday Services when ashes were distributed. Lent is a time of penance and preparation for Easter. Ashes invite us to reflect in the spirit of humility about our human weakness. Once again we are invited to turn to God and ask for his blessing.

When talking about Lent in our chaplaincy group, pupils had some interesting reflections. Michael, Y10, said that "Lent gives us time to learn not to do things that we normally do, like being on our phones all the time". When asked what could people do to live out Lent in a meaningful way, his response was: "pray, give to charity, if you have something too much either cut it down or stop it for 40 days of Lent, and you can actually have a new perspective".

I think it's a good advice, Lent is an opportunity to gain a new perspective, focus on what is truly important. Who or what is on the top of my priority list? May this Lent be a time of fruitful reflection to all of us.
