Salesian past pupils advise UN in Libya

For the past year, Colonel Raymond Hughes, past pupil of Salesian College, Bootle, near Liverpool (now Savio Salesian College), has been deployed to Libya to serve with the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), along with another Salesian past pupil, Captain Albert Angel, US Navy, a graduate of Don Bosco Technical Institute, Rosemead, California.

Ray and Albert are the Senior British and American Military Advisors, working closely with the UN Special Representative to the General Secretary. The UN's mandate is to build and unify Libyan security institutions under democratic civilian control, to respond to the security needs of the Libyan people in accordance with international human rights standards.

Both men feel the qualities and skills developed by their Salesian education helped them in their careers, and their ability to understand the global nature of social problems from a Salesian perspective has been especially valuable in their work in Libya.
