July is month of festivals, fun and (hopefully) sun. Just in case it rains, you can keep the young people in your life occupied by taking a look at our selection of children's books, including some activity books. Or treat yourself to a good read while relaxing in the sun.

Thali Evening raises funds for Don Bosco Ashalayam

Violet DeSousa visited Don Bosco Ashalayam in Kolkata with a group from St John Bosco College, Battersea. She writes about the lasting impact of the experience.

When I said good-bye to 2018 and opened the door to 2019, little did I know that God had an amazing adventure planned for me. That cold winter day in February, as the plane took off, heading towards Kolkata, I was feeling very apprehensive and nervous about what the next nine days would have in store for me. However, I was totally blown away by the warmth, respect and love I received from all the children we met at Don Bosco Ashalayam and at the night school too.

This experience was uplifting and I felt a special bond was formed, with these adorable children. They taught me, that true happiness is not gained from materialistic objects we collect, but from friendships we make in our lives; it was a valuable lesson I brought back with me.

On returning to the UK, our group were eager to organise an event to raise funds, so we could send Don Bosco Ashalayam some money to help them with the amazing work they are doing.

Last Saturday, we organised a Thali Evening, for approximately 55 guests. Our main objective was that it would be a very relaxed and informal event. This would allow everyone to enjoy themselves; as well as learn a little bit about the charity. On the evening, we had a variety of entertainment from magicians, singing and a quiz. The three students that went on the trip, also gave an inspirational talk about their experiences. The feedback from the guests was very uplifting and positive. This was also reflected in the amount we raised; which was an outstanding sum of £1100!!!

As a team, although exhausted, we were very proud of what we had achieved - especially as it was for such a worthy cause!!

"It is not enough to love the young; they must know that they are loved," said Don Bosco.
I hope this money goes towards showing the children of Kolkata they are loved and will have a very special place in our hearts; even though they maybe a million miles away.
