Four students from Savio Salesian College, Bootle, spent last week on a Trainee Detective course, provided by an educational initiative jointly funded by Merseyside Police and Everton in the Community (EitC), the official charity of Everton Football Club.

Together with trainees from four other schools in the area, they investigated a fictional crime incident, which involved visiting Liverpool's Alderhey Hospital to speak with a forensic lead consultant, before interviewing the victim and suspect to gather the best evidence to make an arrest. BBC Radio Merseyside also invited some of the trainees to take part in a radio programme.

During the week, the trainees witnessed a trial, and visited Halewood Police Station's VIPER unit, (Video Identification Parade Electronic Recording), where they witnessed a video identification parade, before learning about the dangers of County Lines and gang culture through a presentation by Dean Coady OBE, a former police officer who provides training around the issues of street gangs, gang culture and the vulnerability of young adults.

It was a fantastic week and the Savio boys gained a lot of insights and enjoyed their experiences working with police officers and other professionals.
