Fr Jakub Ruszniak SDB, Chaplain of Savio Salesian College Bootle, writes about the first of their retreats for children from local primary schools.

Lent is a time of renewal. We are invited to pause and reflect about things that are truly important. Fasting, prayer and almsgiving are different ways which help to refocus our attention on Jesus and prepare ourselves for the greatest Christian festival which is approaching. Our Lady of Walsingham Primary School decided to begin this special season by taking part in the Lenten retreat organised at Savio Salesian College.

A group of Year 4 students visited our school this week, bringing lots of enthusiasm and energy. Guided by our chaplaincy team, pupils explored the theme of friendship. What makes a good friend? What qualities do you expect from a friend? Children shared their thoughts and made lists and drawings to express their thoughts. To help us out, we have watched a part of the movie 'Finding Nemo'. It's a beautiful story, which can teach many lessons about the value of friendship very well.

But reflection was only a part of the programme. In the course of the day children have played games, had their lunch in the school canteen and spent some time on prayer in the chapel. They have also made some new friends: a small group of Savio students has joined us for the retreat to help animate the activities.

All of us have enjoyed the time spent together and hopefully it was a good help with getting into the spirit of Lent. We are now expecting a number of other Primaries joining us for a day-retreat. May it be a fruitful time of renewal!
