As we mark the 25th anniversary of the death of Sean Devereux, Salesian student, teacher, Cooperator and volunteer, Don Bosco Publications has been sending out copies of his biography to all Catholic Secondary schools in the UK, with a letter from our Provincial, Fr Gerry Briody SDB, asking that they use the occasion to promote the ideals of peace, justice and harmony for which he worked so passionately, especially among the young and vulnerable.
Sean's vocation to care for the most vulnerable took him first to Liberia as a Salesian volunteer. He went on to work for the UN, working at first with people exiled as a result of the war in the Ivory Coast and Guinea, and finally moved to Somalia. As was his way, Sean spoke out live on BBC news bulletins about the looting of UN food destined for the poor by warlords. For this, he became a marked man and ultimately paid with his life.
All UK Catholic secondary schools should be receiving their complimentary copy very soon.
For anyone else who would like to know more about this inspiring young man, the book, Sean Devereux: A Life Given for Africa by Michael Delmer SDB, who was Sean's Headteacher, is available on our website here, for £8.50 including UK p&p. We also have a new Pocketbook collection of recollections and tributes by Sean's famiily and friends, which you can find here, at £1.60 including UK p&p.
