Farnborough's Run For Sean raises £3,500

This week, Salesian College, Farnborough, was delighted to present a cheque for over £3,500 to Mr Kevin O'Farrell, Trustee from the Sean Devereux Children's Fund. This staggering amount of money was raised by the Year 7 boys. The boys ran as many laps of the College Playing Fields as they could within an allotted time in memory of former student Sean Devereux.

Michael Delmer's original book on Sean is available on our website

Sean had volunteered with the Salesians, and became a Salesian Cooperator - a lay person who makes a promise to live the spirit of Don Bosco in everyday life, and he accepted the challenge to help the poorest of Africa's youth. He worked first in the West Africa republic of Liberia; then, briefly, in Sierra Leone and for the last half year of his life, in famine-stricken and turbulent Somalia. In January 1993, while working for UNICEF, Sean was shot in the back by a lone gunman while he was walking near the UNICEF compound in Kismayu. He has since become an important role model for the aid-working vocation.

Don Bosco Publications is working on a new book on Sean, in the Pocketbook series, as a tribute to this remarkable man on the 25th anniversary of his death. The book has contributions from his family and from Salesians who knew him well. Look out for more news about this.
