Learning the arts of confidence & respect through ju jitsu in Bootle

Mike Bennett, Associate Assistant Headteacher and Head of RE at Savio Salesian College Bootle, has a super-power: he helps students with their confidence and personal development through the martial art of ju jitsu at a popular extra curricular class at the school.

Mr Bennett has studied Ju-Jitsu for 36 years and is a Black Belt Sho Dan in the World Ju-Jitsu Federation (WJJF). For the past eight years Ju-Jistu has formed part of the massive PE extra curricular offer to pupils. Lessons take place every Wednesday after school, and the 'DoJo' attracts pupils from across the school.

All Year 7 pupils are introduced to Ju-Jitsu as part of the Colleges Transition Summer school. With some of partner primary schools inviting Mr Bennett to teach Ju-Jitsu as part of their extra curricular programme.

In the past year Savio has welcomed the current British Ko-Budo Champion into school to give master classes to the pupils.

Mr Bennet said: "I've seen some big changes in students attending the classes. Some were reticent and apprehensive at first but once they had attended the first session, they were telling all their family and friends about it. Moreover, I've witnessed significant changes overall in all the students in particular, regarding their personal development."

He added: "I know I'm biased but I think the likes of ju jitsu and martial arts in general should be taught in all schools, given the broad, highly positive benefits it brings as part of a young person's education."
