July is month of festivals, fun and (hopefully) sun. Just in case it rains, you can keep the young people in your life occupied by taking a look at our selection of children's books, including some activity books. Or treat yourself to a good read while relaxing in the sun.

Concert for Haiti

Donations continue to arrive for the Salesian relief work in Haiti. Some are from individuals, but several schools have organised special events to raise funds. Fr James McGarry SDB, Parish Priest of St Clare's Parish in Easterhouse, Glasgow, sent the following report on 2nd March 2010.

Today I was presented with a cheque for 1,000 for our Salesians in Haiti. It is the second such sum to be raised by our local Secondary, St Andrew's RC Secondary School, Carntyne, Glasgow. This cheque was the proceeds of a Concert held last Sunday evening in St Thomas's Church, Riddrie. It was "An evening of choral and instrumental classics" presented by the School's Chamber Choir and an Ensemble from the Glasgow Schools' String Orchestra.

Six weeks ago, I was invited to celebrate a Mass for the 5th/6th Form as they prepared for their exams and I incorporated Fr Dave O'Malley's slideshow on Haiti into the Mass. At the end of that Mass I was presented with 1,000.

Now the pupils have doubled that amount, and our thanks go to them and to Mr Bruce Malone (Headteacher), Mr Des McLean (Head of Music), and Miss Josie Smith (Head of RE). We are very proud of these young people.
