Memorial Mass for Fr Chris McMahon

Some of those who worked with Fr McMahon in Malta

Fr Chris McMahon SDB, who died in South Africa on 26th November 2005, was born in Bolton and was a pupil at Thornleigh Salesian College.

On 16th January 2006 there was a Memorial Mass for him in the chapel of Thornleigh College. Fr Michael Winstanley presided with fifteen concelebrants. Among the congregation of more than sixty were Fr Chris's brother, Neil, and sister, Stella, with their families, many parishioners from his home parish of St Mary's Horwich, and several who had been at school with him.

At the end of Mass, Neil recalled Chris's childhood, and Fr James McGarry and Fr Michael O'Meara spoke about the time when Fr Chris was headmaster of St Patrick's school in Sliema, highlighting his great patience and care for the most needy boys and the wonderful family atmosphere in the school. Seven of the SDBs and former SDBs present had worked in Malta with Fr Chris and many further stories were shared during the refreshments in the community house after the Mass.
